In our podiatrist office, we help patients that are suffering from poor foot circulation. While some younger people may suffer from it, poor circulation is a very common problem that tends to impact people as they age. It is important not to ignore poor foot circulation but to visit our clinic. We can identify the cause and treat the problem as soon as possible. Otherwise, it can lead to mobility issues and further foot problems down the road.

Signs of poor circulation

Poor circulation can cause toes to look blue, purple or even red. Unexplained and sudden hair loss on legs can also be due to poor circulation. Another sign of poor circulation is if the feet and hands constantly fall asleep, or are cold.

Common causes of poor foot circulation

There are several reasons for poor circulation, including:

#1. Blood vessel clots

Blood vessel clots are a serious condition that can be fatal. Thus, it is critical to have professional check circulation issues as quickly as possible.

#2. Diabetes

Diabetics tend to have poor circulation in general. Diabetic foot problems are nothing to ignore and require urgent ongoing treatment to prevent eventual foot loss.

#3. Peripheral artery disease

Peripheral artery disease can cause poor circulation in the feet and legs but many people are unaware they have the disease. Due to this, a diagnosis is wise and necessary for treatment.

#4. Obesity

Being obese can place additional strain on the body’s circulatory system so it is wise to try and maintain a healthy weight whenever possible.

#5. High blood pressure

High blood pressure can contribute to poor circulation and this is something that can typically be managed with diet and medication.

How can circulation be improved?

When poor circulation is caused by an underlying health concern such as diabetes, high blood pressure or disease, it is necessary to take medication and treat those conditions. However, if it is caused by some of the standard risk factors, there are things that can be done today. We recommend doing the following:

  • Start exercising
  • Avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time
  • Put legs up when possible
  • Use equipment as necessary (such as massagers)
  • Use support stockings

It is also important to quit smoking. If you currently have one or several cigarettes a day, you can risk decreasing the circulation in your entire body, not just your feet. This is in addition to increasing the risk of having a heart attack, lung cancer or asthma. Smoking is terrible for overall health and by quitting, many people find that they begin to feel better. In fact, people who quit smoking also find an improvement in their circulation. Though quitting can be difficult, it is worthwhile for long-term health.
