Walking After MIS Bunion Surgery: When Can You Walk?
Understanding weight-bearing and mobility after minimally invasive bunion surgery.
Immediate Post-Surgery
Many MIS bunion surgery patients can bear weight on their heel in a surgical boot or post-operative shoe immediately after surgery. However, walking should be limited to necessary movements only (bathroom, kitchen) during the first two weeks.
The First Two Weeks
Focus on rest and elevation. When you do walk, use the surgical boot consistently. Keep weight on your heel and avoid pushing off with your toes. Using crutches or a walker can help reduce stress on the surgical site.
Weeks 2-6: Gradual Progress
Walking in the surgical boot becomes easier. Distance gradually increases based on comfort and swelling. Your surgeon will monitor healing at follow-up appointments and adjust activity recommendations.
Transition to Regular Shoes
Most patients transition to supportive athletic shoes with wide toe boxes between weeks 4-8, depending on healing. Avoid dress shoes and heels until cleared by your surgeon, typically 3-6 months post-surgery.
Note: Weight-bearing protocols vary by surgeon and individual patient factors. Always follow your specific post-operative instructions.
