Pain Management After Bunion Surgery
How to manage discomfort during your bunion surgery recovery.
What to Expect
Pain after bunion surgery is typically most intense during the first 2-3 days, then gradually improves. MIS bunion surgery often results in less post-operative pain than traditional surgery due to smaller incisions and less tissue disruption.
Prescribed Pain Medications
Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication for the first few days. Take medications as directed, staying ahead of the pain rather than waiting until it becomes severe.
Non-Medication Pain Relief
- Elevation: Keep your foot elevated above heart level as much as possible
- Ice: Apply ice behind the knee (not directly on foot) for 20 minutes at a time
- Rest: Limit walking during the first two weeks
- Compression: Surgical dressing provides appropriate compression
When to Call Your Surgeon
Contact your surgeon if you experience:
- Pain that worsens instead of improving after day 3
- Signs of infection (increased redness, warmth, drainage)
- Fever above 101°F
- Numbness that does not improve
