MIS Bunion Surgery Recovery Week by Week: What to Expect
A detailed timeline of what to expect during your MIS bunionectomy recovery, from the first day through full healing.
Week 1: Immediate Post-Operative Period
The first week focuses on rest and pain management. You will keep your foot elevated as much as possible to reduce swelling. Your surgical dressing should remain dry and intact. Most patients can bear weight in a protective surgical boot, though some surgeons prefer limited weight-bearing initially.
Pain medication is typically needed for the first 3-5 days. Ice applied behind the knee (not directly on the foot) can help reduce swelling.
Week 2: First Follow-Up Visit
Around day 10-14, you will have your first follow-up appointment. The surgeon will remove your dressing, examine the incision sites, and possibly remove sutures if absorbable sutures were not used. X-rays may be taken to assess bone positioning.
Weeks 3-4: Gradual Progress
Swelling continues to decrease. You may begin gentle toe range-of-motion exercises as directed by your surgeon. The surgical boot remains necessary for walking. Many patients can return to sedentary work if they can keep their foot elevated.
Weeks 5-6: Increased Mobility
Some patients may transition to supportive athletic shoes during this period. Short walks become easier. You may be cleared to drive if surgery was on your left foot (automatic transmission). Physical therapy exercises may be prescribed.
Weeks 7-12: Transition Period
Regular footwear with wide toe boxes becomes comfortable for many patients. Walking distance increases. Some residual swelling is normal, especially at the end of the day. Low-impact activities may gradually resume.
Months 3-6: Full Healing
Bone healing typically completes by 3-6 months. Swelling continues to resolve. Most patients return to their full range of activities. High-impact sports should wait until your surgeon clears you.
Important: Every patient heals differently. This timeline is a general guide. Follow your surgeon's specific instructions for the best outcome.
