Bunion Surgery Scars: MIS vs Traditional

What to expect for scarring with different bunion surgery approaches.

MIS Bunion Surgery Scars

Minimally invasive bunion surgery uses small incisions, typically 3-5mm each. These tiny incisions typically heal to become barely visible scars. Most patients find their MIS scars difficult to see after full healing.

Traditional Bunion Surgery Scars

Traditional open bunionectomy requires a larger incision, typically 5-10cm along the side of the big toe. This results in a more noticeable scar, though it often fades significantly over 1-2 years.

Scar Care Tips

  • Keep incisions clean and dry as directed
  • Protect scars from sun exposure during the first year
  • Once healed, gentle massage may help flatten scars
  • Silicone scar sheets or gels may be recommended
  • Be patient - scars continue to improve for 12-18 months

Factors Affecting Scarring

Individual healing varies based on genetics, skin type, age, and how well post-operative care instructions are followed. Some people are prone to thicker scars (keloids) regardless of incision size.
