Best Shoes to Wear After Bunion Surgery
Footwear recommendations for protecting your bunion surgery results.
Weeks 0-6: Surgical Boot or Post-Op Shoe
Immediately after surgery, you will wear a surgical boot or post-operative shoe provided by your surgeon. This protects your foot while allowing necessary walking.
Weeks 6-12: Transition Footwear
When cleared by your surgeon, transition to:
- Supportive athletic shoes with wide toe boxes
- Adjustable lacing or Velcro closures (for swelling)
- Firm heel counters for stability
- Good arch support
Long-Term Footwear Guidelines
To protect your surgical results and prevent recurrence:
- Choose shoes with adequate toe room
- Avoid high heels (especially over 2 inches)
- Look for shoes with good arch support
- Avoid pointed-toe shoes
- Consider custom orthotics if recommended
When Can You Wear Heels?
Most surgeons recommend waiting at least 3-6 months before wearing heels, and then only low heels (under 2 inches) for limited periods. High heels increase pressure on the big toe joint and may contribute to bunion recurrence.
